Oslo Cathedral Choir
Oslo Cathedral Choir was founded in 1982 and has through concerts and record productions established a reputation as the nation’s leading promoters of church music. Meanwhile, basic liturgic tasks are attended by weekly participation at the various morning services in the Oslo Cathedral Church. The Cathedral Choir and its 50 permanent singers arrange around 20 concerts annually, mainly performing their own productions. The choir acts as a professional vocal ensemble with a national responsibility, and as an aim to secure the capital church a staff of professional singers. They receive public funding, as well as private sponsoring from DnbNor and OBOS.
In 2006, the Cathedral Choir introduced the project Ad Fontes! (”to the sources”). The aim of this project was to bring the rich heritage of church music back to the sources, in effect by performing classical church music as it was originally intended; as part of divine service, but with a complete orchestra and soloists. During the last three years, the choir has performed masses by Mozart and Haydn, as well as Bach’s cantatas as parts of the liturgy.
