Poing
The trio POING was formed in 1999 and comprise some of the foremost musicians in the country: Frode Haltli on accordion, Rolf-Erik Nystrøm on saxophone and Håkon Thelin on contrabass. During Ultima, they will celebrate their 10 year anniversary at Litteraturhuset on Thursday September 17th.
POING make their selection among composers that cross genre boundaries, but having one foot set in the Modern. In later years, POING has collaborated with some of our time’s most prominent composers, such as Michael Finnissy and Richard Barrett. The ensemble has works closely together with their composers during the period of composition, and they never yield for complex scores in their search for a broader audience than the established classical community can offer.
Their repertoire ranges from Bach via Piazolla to Metallica. The original line-up has undreamed-of possibilities, and the ensemble enjoys a permanent collaboration with composer and vocal artist Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje, a collaboration that so far has resulted in tours in Austria and USA. Other collaborators are as dissimilar as Dror Feiler and The Dubliners.
Apart from this, POING is known for their annual concerts on the night before May 1st on various brown dives in Oslo. Also they arrange the Christmas concert “Pøbeljul med POING” at Parkteateret in Oslo, in which a number of friends of POING take part.
