Kjell Tore Innervik

Kjell Tore Innervik is one of the most original musicians in Norway, both due to having constructed his own percussion instruments and due to his unusual performances. Kjell Tore Innervik (b. 1974) is not afraid of exploring new music and fresh ways to communicate music – and if possible, not without a touch of humour. He studied percussion at the Norwegian Academy of Music, where he also took a diploma in advanced performing practice in 2003. In his doctoral work at the same institution, he constructed and built his own quarter tone marimba, an instrument he has had several composers writing music for.

The post-doctoral work he is currently involved in is labelled ”The extended marimba”, and is to be a contribution to the international movement New Instruments for Musicial Expression (NIME), an organization that develops new instruments, both acoustic, electronic and multimedial. Innervik works, among other things, on expanding, electro-acoustically, his quarter tone marimba.

He also works on the concert form, and endeavours to make it interesting from the audience’s perspective. A famous treat is his way of communicating with the audience through loudspeakers or large screens, by which he can can comment upon the ongoing concert situation and the audience. He strives for unity and wholeness in the concert experience, and important instruments thereto are dramaturgy and light.
