Edgard Varèse was one of the 20th century’s most distinctive musical pioneers.
Rather than pursuing the traditional dramaturgic understanding of form, he soon adopted the uncompromising approach that physical concepts such as space, object, and size should serve as the basis for the phenomenon of music. This is evident in the powerful orchestral work Arcana. Unlike Varèse, Igor Stravinsky left behind a long list of works which in some cases have extremely different styles. Variations: Aldous Huxley in Memoriam is one of his later works, and belongs to the so-called serial (or American) period.
