Ancient Chinese poetry’s description of the relationship between nature and simplicity may have a calming effect in the face of a contemporary life that is characterised by an increasingly insistent existential urgency.
This experience lies at the core of Gus- tav Mahler’s large-scale symphonic song cycle Das Lied von der Erde and is pic- ked up by Helge Iberg in Sanger fra livets jord. Where Mahler wanted to combine symphony and lied, Iberg’s work also contains concertante interludes for violin and piano, as well as text projections and poerty recitals by a Chinese actor. Mahler’s work was originally intended for a large orchestra and alto and tenor soloist, but will be performed here in Arnold Schönberg’s arrangement for chamber orchestra.
