The first of three genre-busting evening of washboard bands, contemporary versions of Chopin mazurkas and a viola player with a world reputation.
Nils Henrik Asheim’s award winning CD Mazurka. Remaking Chopin does exactly what the title implies. Asheim joins forces with Gjertruds sigøyner-orkester with versions that differ from we are used to hearing. Garth Knox moves effortlessly between musical genres.
He takes us further into Luciano Berio’s series of Sequenzas with the neck-breaking and intense Sequenza VI for viola from 1967. The BIT20 Jugband gets its name from the musical styles from Mississippi, where poverty led to creativity in musical instruments: wash-boards, spoons, tin cans and pots. Per Zanussi, Christian Wallumrød, Erlend Skomsvoll and Øyvind Torvund have written music for this band. Skomsvoll’s work was critically acclaimed when first performed in Bergen last year.
