We have launched our new member programme ultiMATE with exclusive discounts and benefits, and more!
Music made from wind, rain and thunder, using wood and windmills.
Sailors must listen to the weather, which whispers to them through gusts of wind and cloud formations. They steer their ships according to what nature tells them – a dance between human, machine and the forces of nature.
Inspired by old theatre traditions, Lithuanian composer Arturas Bumšteinas has, together with theatre carpenter Ernestas Volodzka, reconstructed machines that create weather sounds, just as in the theatres of Antiquity and the Baroque era.
In Bumšteinas’ work Navigations, the weather is recreated in full force using large wooden machines, operated by five musicians in an open space. Tropical cyclones unfold, thunder strikes against wood, and seeds drift across the sea, carried by wind and rain.
Take your place on the deck of our ship, and join us as simple machines fill the space with shifting soundscapes!
NB. Take part in the workshop Barnas verksted på Ultima: Værmusikk og lydmakeri in Vinterhagen, where you can create your own weather instruments and join the sailor-performers on their odyssey.
The concert is part of Barnas Ultima-dager – the festival’s own programme for its youngest audience (but adults are more than welcome too)! At BUD, you can discover contemporary music and exciting new sounds through concerts, performances and workshops.
