Ultima leader leaves Festival directorship; takes up new position

Director/Artistic Director Thorbjørn Tønder Hansen will be stepping down from 1 January 2023. He wll take up a new role as head of the Fund for Danish-Norwegian Collaboration.

Thorbjørn Tønder Hansen has been running Ultima Festial since 2017, and has strengthened the festival’s artistic profile, including during the pandemic with two extra-challenging editions in 2020 and 2021.

Thorbjørn Tønder Hansen:
‘It has been a huge honour over the past five years to lead one of the world’s foremost contemporary music festivals and to work in such a dynamic, diverse, pan-artistic and internationally oriented musical milieu as can be found in Norway. I would like to thank Ultima’s board and administration, its members and other partners and for an incredible and fruitful collaboration.’

Ultima board leader Yngve Slettholm:
‘Thorbjørn Tønder Hansen has done a formidable job as Festival head over five years, and it is such a shame that he has now decided to say goodbye to Ultima. We are beginning the process of finding a new Director/Artistic Director, and wish him well in his new position.’

Ultima Festival takes place in Oslo over 10 days annually in September. It was founded in 1991 and is currently made up of 18 member organisations. It is the largest contemporary music festival in northern Europe.
