REtransLATE is a dance performance about communication and (mis)interpretation. When passing messages and stories from one person to another via the medium of dance, you can never be sure where the misunderstanding occurs on the one hand or where other dimensions of meaning tend to end up.

Bergen-based Belgian dance artist Mirte Bogaert questions conventions and hierarchies in the theatre by integrating bodies, movement, sound, light and text. She explores possibilities for dance through methods of translation and observations related to speaking and breathing. The point of departure for REtransLATE was to translate different aspects of communication beyond words between the performers, though starting with personal stories. Music comes from Bergen based experimental guitarist Stephan Meidell.

I liked how the dancers incorporated each other’s body language, but I found it even more interesting to experience how Stephan Meidell’s music and RandianeSandboe’s lighting design also responded to the dancer’s movements, or the dancers, to theirs.

Chinese whispers

I have never seen anything quite like this in a dance performance. Performers on stage silently communicate with each other through movement and gesture, and ‘offer’ those gestures back to each other like a physical game of Chinese whispers.
